This is an individual contributor position responsible for operating the galvanizing department’s 15-ton overhead bridge crane. The Bridge Crane Operator is responsible for inspecting hooks and chains and using gauges to check the thickness of the crane set-up. Incumbent is responsible for securing loads with hooks and chains and moving the suspended loads throughout the plant by operating the radio-controlled overhead bridge cranes. The Bridge Crane Operator is responsible for monitoring steel products in the process tanks and zinc baths to achieve desired, high quality end results. Incumbent will also be responsible for operating and maneuvering the drossing equipment. In addition, the Bridge Crane Operator will assist in general plant clean up and housekeeping, and work safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Essential Functions:
Inspect hooks and chains and use gauges to check the thickness of the crane set-up
Secure loads with hooks and chains
Operate the radio controlled overhead bridge crane and move suspended and non-suspended loads throughout the plant
Monitor steel products in the process tanks and zinc baths
Move pieces of steel up to 50 pounds by hand from different locations in the plant and yard; most frequent lift is 35 pounds
Operate and maneuver the drossing equipment in a proper and safe manner
Spend up to 75% of shift walking/standing
High awareness for safety while wearing all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Work in a non-temperature controlled environment that includes exposure to outdoor weather conditions

This position reports to the Shift Supervisor
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Ability to recognize hazardous substances and to know basic employee responsibilities for chemical safety
Perform duties of a Material Handler and Crew Leader functions, as needed
Assist in general plant clean up and housekeeping
Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to write and perform addition and subtraction of whole numbers
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Six (6) months of galvanizing experience
One (1) year of previous experience with overhead crane operations
Read and follow written and verbal instructions
Perform basic math functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
Lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds
The ability to pass an eye exam
Operate forklift and / or straddle truck as needed

SKILL
Educational Background
Bridge Crane Operator must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions. Reading, writing, the addition and subtraction of whole numbers is required. Must understand completely the level of quality expected, as established by our quality program. Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills. Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for or around future needs or problems. Must know the quality requirements for all custom galvanizing as noted in the ASTM123 Standard.
Job Training Skill Development
Bridge Crane Operators will first receive training on the basic skills of a Material Handler. After 2-4 weeks training as a Material Handler, the Bridge Crane Operator training will begin. Six months of on the job training are needed to achieve a minimum acceptable level of performance. During this six months, incumbent will train on all overhead bridge cranes in the plant.
Decision Making
Bridge Crane Operator will help plan for the most effective utilization of equipment, material, and human resources in the galvanizing process area. Will make critical decisions concerning the galvanizing process such as condition of incoming steel, appropriate cycle times, appropriate immersion times, quality levels, solutions to process problems, and material flow for maximum output. Close attention to submersion times to get required mill thickness in least amount of time is required.
EFFORT
Physical Effort
Bridge Crane Operator will spend 75% of his / her time standing and walking using pendant / remote control for crane operation. The other 25% of the time will be standing, walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting parts or fixtures weighing from 25 to 50 pounds.
Mental and Visual Effort
Due to the visual requirements of this position, employee must demonstrate acceptable vision. Continual visual inspection of all parts produced by the Bridge Crane Operator to assure an acceptable level of quality. Continual visual inspection is required of all production racks / fixtures / chains to assure no unsafe conditions exist. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Excellent eye / hand coordination required and continual awareness / concentration to assure safe, efficient crane operation and proper process line flow. Ongoing analysis of every dip to determine best possible procedure for pickling / dipping each load. This is especially critical to custom work and engineered product lines where potential quality and safety problems need to be identified in advance. The Bridge Crane Operator will spend 100% of his / her time performing duties, which require attention to the above details.
Inattention to these details can create major problems in the area of quality, safety, productivity, and facility capacity. High degree of caremental strain for constant safety of others is required.
Continual inspection of acid tanks for lost parts. Acid will bubble and parts must be taken out of tank right away to avoid ruining chemical make-up of tank or damage to product.
Responsibility for Equipment and Process
Typical loss due to improper operation of the bridge crane would average $1,000 per incident, plus any costs associated with lost productivity due to downtime. Damage to tank walls or heat exchangers due to improper crane operation typically run $4,000 per incident. Damage to production fixtures due to improper crane operations typically run $250 per incident. Damage to chemical make-up due to improper crane operation typically run several thousand dollars. Under normal operating conditions with competent operators, there is even probability that losses will occur.
Responsibility for Material or Product
Losses due to mismanagement of the galvanizing process are difficult to define but will occur continuously even under the best conditions. Solution contamination, chemical losses, and excessive zinc pickup will all result if proper galvanizing procedures are not followed. There is a high probability of picking up more zinc than is desired / needed if proper procedures are not followed, with costs averaging up to $100 per dip made in the zinc bath. Through the continual attention to proper operating procedures, the galvanizing Bridge Crane Operator will be instrumental in the minimizing of damage to the product due to careless or improper practices. If the job is not performed properly, there is a very high possibility of damage to the product, such as dented pipe, over pickled material, lost parts, bent or damaged parts, and improperly prepared steel. Typical cost per incident would average $400.00.
Responsibility for Safety of Others
The heavy nature of the industry makes it reasonable to expect that injuries could very well result in permanent disability or death. To prevent the possibility of injuries occurring to fellow employees or themselves, the Bridge Crane Operator isexpected to carry out the work assignment in a safe and conscientious fashion. Continual attention to detail by the Bridge Crane Operator isnecessary to avoid hazards and / or injury to fellow employees. Failure on the incumbent's part to fulfill this responsibility has the potential to directly result in injury to their fellow employees. These injuries may include such minor incidents as pinched fingers or hands, to more severe contusions or crushed extremities, to catastrophic injuries such as severe zinc / chemical burns, broken arms, legs, or even death.
Each employee is responsible for learning and applying all provided safety training as outlined by the company and department safety representative and / or supervisor. Keeping safety at the forefront in the daily performance of job duties includes personal safety, safety of others in the department and safekeeping of all company resources.
Actively participates in department safety; demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors and conforms to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.
Responsibility for Work of Others
The Bridge Crane Operator shares responsibility with the Crew Leaders to constantly monitor the work of department Material Handlers to ensure proper procedures are followed and quality standards are met. Will be expected to assist in the training of new Bridge Crane Operators to achieve the above mentioned levels of responsibility.
JOB CONDITIONS
Working Conditions
The employee is continually exposed to a working environment consisting of smoke and irritating particulate impurities, heat at the kettle that averages 20-30 degrees above ambient temperature, acid fumes from pickling tanks, and large quantities of windblown dust and ash produced as by-product to the galvanizing process. In addition, the nature of the industry results in extreme heat in the summer (typically 10 to 15 degrees above outdoor temperatures), and melting snow off of incoming material results in damp, cold working conditions in the winter.
The employee is subjected to large fluctuations in temperature brought about by warm temperatures generated inside the building by the galvanizing process, and continued blasts of cold air created by material handling activities in and out of that facility. Noise levels in the area are substantial and hearing protection is required. Will be subjected to working in a foggy environment in the wintertime in process tank area due to the hot tanks and cold air.
Hazards
The galvanizing industry is a heavy, demanding industry that is plagued by many hazards; however, this job description assumes that many of these hazards are avoidable if properly managed by close supervision and skilled employees. Some hazards are, include: hypersensitive reaction to chemical environment, heat exhaustion or aggravations created by blowing dust and ash. In addition, constant exposure to such hazards as burns, cuts, contusions of various degrees and eye injuries make the possibility for incidents high even under the best conditions.
