A Brief Summary of This Position

The primary responsibility of the Mill Operator is to set up and operate the mill to produce the required quality of product at the maximum speed and highest yield possible. The Mill Operator is responsible for adjusting any one of a number of guide rolls, side rolls, forming rolls, and weld head rolls to ensure a quality product. The Mill Operator will also train to run all machines in the department. In addition, the Mill Operator must adhere to all safety measures and wear all provided PPE.

Essential Functions

  • Set up and operate the mill to produce the required quality of product at the maximum speed and highest yield possible

  • Perform tooling changes and machine adjustments as needed to guide rolls, side rolls, forming rolls, and weld head rolls

  • Use wrenches to adjust tooling form gauge changes

  • Adhere to all safety measures and wear all required PPE

  • Perform minor mechanical repairs when possible and contact appropriate maintenance personnel when needed

  • Safely operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and combilifts

  • Operate a 6-ton crane to unload and move coils in the work area

  • Perform daily crane and forklift inspections

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area

  • Set up and operate weld test press as needed

  • Keep accurate reporting records of inspections, scrap, and downtime

  • Perform regular visual inspections of tubing for length, straightness, and workmanship

  • Foster a climate and create an environment which encourages openness and cooperation will all others

  • This position reports into the Production Supervisor and has no direct reports but may occasionally be responsible for training other Mill Operators

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • 7+ years relevant work experience

  • Able to successfully perform basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) including decimals and fractions

  • Able to read English, have legible handwriting, and good verbal communication skills

  • Ability to interpret blueprints/production cards and be able to use measuring equipment such as tape measures, micrometers, and dial calipers

  • Must have basic mechanical abilities and experience

  • Must have prior forklift experience and the ability to acquire a Valmont forklift license

  • Ability to operate an overhead crane

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds although the most common lift is 30 to 40 pounds

  • Ability to stand 95% of the time

  • Must be able to work in a team environment

  • Must be flexible on hours and able to work different shifts if needed

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Working knowledge for the operation of a wire feed welder

  • Sufficient welding knowledge to diagnose a tubing crush test
