A Brief Summary of This Position

This position is primarily responsible for supporting development and maintenance of the North American Pole Operations quality management system and its processes. The QMS Specialist is also responsible to support cross-functional teams when they conduct problem solving and improvement initiatives related to quality. This position will work directly with multiple departments whose work affects quality, and it will interact with managers, supervisors, and individual contributors.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the QMS & Audit Program Manager

  • This role requires up to 50% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays

  • Analyzes, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates QMS documents (e.g., policies, procedures, work instructions, visual aids, and forms) and associated training

  • Supports the identification, creation, codification, sharing, and application of knowledge related to quality

  • Participates in problem solving and improvement events (e.g. kaizens)

  • Interprets Valmont quality requirements, including but not limited to, quality management system (QMS) documents, specifications, blueprints, and external standards (e.g. AISC, ASTM, AWS)

  • Works collaboratively and professionally with stakeholders to promote engagement with the quality management system

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in quality consistent with Valmont’s quality policy and goals

  • Conducts business on behalf of the Company in full compliance with the laws of the many jurisdictions in which we operate

  • Assists with other quality assurance functions as assigned, including but not limited to, management review, project specification review, document control, recordkeeping, process control, inspection and testing, calibration, review of nonconformances, customer complaint resolution, corrective actions, training, and quality auditing

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s in relevant field or Associate’s degree with 3+ years of experience or 5+ years of relevant quality control experience

  • Experience in the manufacture of metal products and 3+ years of experience in quality control or quality assurance

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Very detail-oriented and organized

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to operate basic computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Office programs)

  • Ability to book travel and manage expenses

  • Ability to interpret standard U.S. and metric measurements

  • Ability to understand and use industry standard mathematical equations and formulas

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Fluent in English and Spanish

  • Experience overseeing an accredited quality management system

  • SNT-TC-1A VT Level II, MT Level II, and UT Level II certifications

  • Certification in welding inspection (AWS CWI)

  • Certification in coating inspection (NACE CIP)

  • Certification in bolting inspection (AWS or ICC)

  • Certification as a quality auditor (e.g. ASQ CQA or Exemplar Global)

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in the field including Utility installation sites, Valmont manufacturing sites, and customer or vendor manufacturing sites. When the incumbent is in the field, the employee may need to deal with hot, cold, rainy or windy conditions. While working on-site or visiting the manufacturing locations, use of necessary PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times. The work environment can be demanding. In addition to exposure to the elements, the incumbent will be required to perform physically demanding labor to include digging, climbing, working at heights, lifting, bending, stooping, and kneeling. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds using safe lifting techniques. Domestic and international travel represents up to 80% of the work schedule and includes transportation by vehicle and by air. This position requires movement around the office and fields as well as the ability to drive a vehicle to and from the various work sites including the occasional transportation of other team members. This position may require lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, pivoting, reaching, standing, climbing stairs, handling, gripping, grasping and visually inspecting equipment parts. Overall the physical effort level is considered moderate to heavy when in the field. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
