A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Machine Design/Facility Engineer is accountable for the complete project design and implementation of manufacturing equipment as directed by the management team. This encompasses all facets of design and project management including conceptual development, modeling in 3D environment, functional verification, fabrication drawings, material specifications and ordering, manufacturing oversight, coordination and quality control, testing O&M documentation and training where applicable. This position also provides similar design and project management support for Maintenance and Facilities projects as assigned. The incumbent is also involved in facility sustainability programs and is expected to lead sustainability team. Engineers also assist with water system operation, maintain ArcGIS database of facility and create/update map set. The Facility Engineer must be able to correctly assess risk and complete risk assessment for machine and facility projects.
Prepare and implement projects to support the company’s goals to and objectives to maximize accomplishments by establishing and maintaining schedules for the completion of assigned projects
Research and analyze capital equipment projects/expansion projects for purposes of cost reduction, increased production or additional profits
Provide support assistance to other departments as required
Assist in the training and development of personnel regarding new machinery or processes
Develop, maintain, evaluate and modify existing manufacturing processes and specify equipment, methods and tooling to produce product at the lowest cost
Provide engineering expertise to assist in the resolution of manufacturing difficulties; i.e. – material handling devices, methods improvement, material flow studies, bundle and loading analysis, cost reductions, tooling design, etc.
Assist in cost reduction programs making recommendations to management for necessary changes or methods improvement to insure efficient operation
Participate in special projects relating to Facilities improvement. Prepare cost estimates as required. Work closely with Manufacturing, Tool & Die and vendors on those projects requiring their involvement
Know the Valmont Safety Mission Statement and support the department Safety-By-Objective plan in departments worked. Accomplished by assisting in the implementation of identified safety projects requiring engineering support
Know the Valmont direction and goals of the CSF initiative statement. Direct projects according to this direction
This position reports into the Machine Design/Facility Engineer Manager and does not have any direct or indirect reports
This role requires up to 20% travel (internationally and domestically), including overnight stays
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Bachelor’s Mechanical Engineering
Three (3) years in a manufacturing support or an industrial equipment design position
Working knowledge of computer controlled equipment
Autocad 2D drafting and Inventor 3D modeling skills
Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project
High level of technical competence in Mechanical Engineering
Proven history of problem-solving in an environment involving welding, gas cutting, plasma cutting, press working, machining and ERW tube manufacturing, planning, hydraulics, and troubleshooting mechanical problems
Proven history of successful capital improvement and project management experience
Demonstrated strong communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and organizational skills
The ability to travel both domestically and internationally up to 20%
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
EIT Certification or Professional Engineer’s License
Finite element analysis experience
Lean Manufacturing experience
Six Sigma certification
Grade 4 water operator license
Five (5) years in a manufacturing support or an industrial equipment design position
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
In addition to an office setting, the incumbent will also spend a portion of their time outside and in the manufacturing areas. This position will be exposed to all hazards located at manufacturing sites including noise, fumes, excessive heat and cold, dust, welding arc, all chemicals associated with the manufacturing areas, fire, smoke, unstable debris, confined spaces, and working in high areas. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests as well as wear proper PPE when in the shop environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The position requires both domestic and international travel up to 20%.
