A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Associate Electrical Design Engineer is primarily responsible for design and development activities which are essential to maintaining and refining current products. The incumbent may also assist with new product development and testing. This position frequently interacts with various areas of the company including individuals from product development teams, Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, and Engineering Services. The Associate Electrical Design Engineer works closely with other in-house Engineers and Senior Engineers to assure specifications are met and receives consultation from Manufacturing to ensure that a design is feasible and efficient. The Associate Electrical Design Engineer supports the development of “engineering best practice” procedures and helps produce design validation standards. This position conducts and attends design review meetings to provide technical design input as needed. To provide the end results required by this position, the Associate Electrical Design Engineer follows design and development procedures and occasionally recommends updates to these procedures. This position reports into the Electrical Engineering manager and has no direct reports.
Design, develop and refine electrical products to meet or exceed specifications as defined by the customer
Utilize creative and innovative design solutions to aid in solving field and manufacturing problems to maintain and improve existing products
Maintain positive relationships with customers, field personnel and other Valmont departments to ensure the most efficient working environment
Provide detailed project documentation as defined by Product Development procedures
Maintain appropriate professional competencies to ensure successful new design conception, utilizing the latest state-of-the-art technology
Review and provide input on product development procedures to ensure continuous process improvement
Provide technical design inputs and technical direction for design reviews as needed
This role may require occasional overnight domestic or international travel (up to 5%)
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Bachelor’s Degree with 3+ years relevant experience
Demonstrated proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook
Ability to resolve complex problems and large challenges
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal customers and peers
Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is preferred
Proficient with electrical standards (UL, CE, NEC, etc.)
Proficient with electric motors and motor control
Ability to troubleshoot and write code for programmable logic controllers
Familiarization with National Instruments LabVIEW software
Agricultural related work experience is preferred
Ability to identify components of a mechanized irrigation system is preferred
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in a lab environment or office setting; however, incumbent may be required to work at times in a field environment. The work environment can be demanding at times with harsh weather conditions while working outdoors. While visiting the manufacturing areas of the plant, the use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and attend meetings. Travel is rare and represents up to 5% of the work schedule.
The Associate Electrical Design Engineer is constantly using hands and fingers. Reaching hands and arms above shoulder height while working in the office may be needed. The employee is frequently required to move about the office or plant. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, visual color perception as well as depth perception. Due to the visual requirements of this position, employee must demonstrate acceptable vision. The determination of acceptable vision will be made by the Health Wellness Safety Services Department on an individual basis.
