A Brief Summary of This Position:
This individual contributor position which reports to the Supervisor – Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the creation of drawings and bill of material to support design projects. This person will ensure completion of drawing and bill of material changes as requested by Engineering Change Request. The position of Design Technician carries with it the responsibility of helping the team meet its goals as outlined by the Product Managers. A person in this position must know the design process and understand the goals of the team so they can deal with possible problems before they happen.
The Design Tech Department is responsible for processing drawings and designs for Electrical and Mechanical engineers while maintaining the company objectives for quality and lead-time. This role interacts with people in all departments in order to maintain amiable and profitable relationships in inter-departmental communication.
The incumbent shall have knowledge of departmental and company goals, policies and procedures and the product lines represented. Deviations from these shall be minimal and only when beneficial to the department, division and company.
This position is important to the results of the department and the division. The incumbent is allowed to establish work routines and/or schedules, within company policies, in order to maintain efficient work flow. He/she may identify, recommend and help develop revisions to standard product designs, drafting procedures and systems to improve the department and the division.
Responsible for creating new drawings and bills of material to support new project designs
Responsible for making changes to current production drawings and bills of material
Determines changes, corrections and requirements to meet project demands.
Contacts and discusses details of assignment with engineers, product management, and internal customers and prepares necessary sketches and drawings for use in producing the various product lines.
Responsible for advancing personal technical competence in order to participate in utilizing the latest technology
Provides assistance and input on project basis to other team members in development of shop drawings
Complies with Company’s attendance policy
Follows prescribed safety rules and regulations
Other Important Details about the Role:
Investigates and procures data required to develop a design
Assists in developing design of current and future products as directed by Electrical and Mechanical Design Engineers
Responsible for making design layouts as directed by Design Engineers and to complete all drawings and bill of materials to support the design
Accountable for making drafting changes based on Engineering Change Request
Requires a high attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines
Demonstrates knowledge of the material, techniques and processes used within the irrigation industry
Demonstrates good judgment and decision making skills
Utilizes deductive reasoning ability to formulate answers to specific questions that make sense
Maintain a cooperative and professional attitude in dealing with all departments of the company
Works well in a team environment
Maintain an awareness of current Drafting policies and procedures
Provide technical or drafting support of any department, for any project which will enhance product or company interest
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
High School diploma and 4+ years of relevant work/educational experience OR an Associate’s Degree
The ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English
Proficiency in Auto CAD, 2D design and drafting software
Experience using 3D modeling software (Creo, Inventor, or Solidworks)
PC experience including basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Demonstrated ability to keep a positive, professional attitude in a fast-paced environment subject to specific deadlines which must be met
Strong problem solving skills, with attention to detail
Basic knowledge of electrical layouts
Excellent customer focus, including positive customer feedback
Acceptable attendance and prior work record
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Five (5) years of experience in a mechanical drafting or design tech position
Strong project management skills
Experience with Creo or Pro/E 3D design software
Experience with CAD and data management programs
The ability to work well in team environment
An electrical or mechanical background
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
