A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Data Engineer’s role is to expand and optimize our data, data architecture, data flow and collection of data for cross functional teams. As a member of our Data and Analytics team, the Data Engineer will support our BI Analysts, Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and other members of IT to ensure the data architecture is consistent for all ongoing projects. The candidate is expected to be an experienced data wrangler and pipeline builder who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them up from scratch. The ideal candidate will be excited about helping us redesign and build up our data architecture to support Valmont’s move to becoming a Data Driven organization and to utilize advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence.
This position reports to the Manager Enterprise Data Warehouse and has no direct or indirect reports
No travel requirements
Flexible schedule however must be able to work in the office one day per week
Work with cross departmental teams to define metrics, guidelines, and strategies for effective use of data and information
Plan with team, document and enforce data architecture standards
Work closely with Data Analytics and business teams to identify, design, and build appropriate data and analytical tools
Assist in the development of data management policies and procedures
Develop best practices for data lifecycle management
Conduct research and make recommendations on big data infrastructure, database technologies, analytics tools, services, protocols, and standards
Drive the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources
Develop tools and libraries that will help Data Analytics team members more efficiently interface with large amounts of data
Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to data analytics
Collaborate with database and disaster recovery administrators to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets
Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the Data Analytics team
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Preferred Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience or Associate’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or 7+ years of relevant experience
Strong working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases
Strong analytic skills related to working with structured and unstructured datasets
Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management
Ability to manipulate, process, and extract value from large, disconnected datasets
Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores
Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
Strong project management experience
Ability to learn and understand organization’s goals and objectives
Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in the field of computer science, informatics, or another quantitative field and/or 5 years equivalent work experience
Experience with big data, data pipeline, stream processing and workflow management tools
Experience with Microsoft Azure Cloud and the associated tools
Experience with Data Vault Methodology and WhereScape RED and 3D

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
