A Brief Summary of This Position
The primary responsibility of the Small Mill Cutoff Operator is to set up and operate cutoff equipment to produce high-quality steel tubes at a precise length with a minimum amount of burr and/or scarf, and at the highest speed possible. This position will also review and provide quality assurance on the tubing before releasing to the end user. The Cutoff Operator will be responsible for making critical machine adjustment as needed to stay within close tolerances for ovality and straightness of all tubing produced. The incumbent will also have oversite around the scrap rates with their department/mill.
Essential Functions .
Set up and operate any one of three flying lathe style cutoffs, one flying bandsaw cutoff, and two flying friction cutoffs
Operator computer-controlled equipment to produce tubes at correct lengths within specified tolerances
Ensure that tubes are cut with a minimal amount of burr and scarf
Adjust machine setups as necessary to cut evenly around the tube with no distortion on the ends
Provides quality assurance inspections and provides ideas on changes to ensure end product meets specification
Communicates with various departments to ensure smooth transitions from product completion to the truck loading process
Perform various testing on the end product to ensure correct set up and operations of NDT unit. Ability to recognize defective weld seams
Maintain accurate records of orders completed, footage produced, and elapsed times
Perform preventive maintenance to the cutoff machine as well as the sizing section of the mill
Attention to detail for setups, data tracking, heat changes, and overall operation of the sizing section and cutoff operation
Ability to set up and operate de-dimple machine
Adequately set up and adjust mill sizing section to produce tube to production card requirements
Provide accurate measurements for the steel by reading a portable C.I.R station
Inventory control around tools and ensuring adequate inventory as needed
Wear all required PPE and follow all applicable safety policies
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
1-3 years relevant work experience in a production environment
Must possess basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and the ability to convert decimals and fractions (both ways)
Sufficient communication skills to learn from and train other operators and to interact with other team members to achieve an effective operation
Working knowledge of general shop tools such as welders, cutting torches, grinders, tape measures, and micrometers
Must be able to operate and read C.I.R. stations for measuring steel
Ability to set up and operate turkheads
Must be able to read and understand simple blueprints
Must be able to read and write legibly
Ability to stand up to 95% of shift and able to bend and stoop up to 70% of shift
