A Brief Summary of This Position:
The Automation Engineer will provide technical direction and support for Operations in all aspects of Robotics and Automation. This position will have to be collaborative and interface with business functions to provide technical expertise for robotic applications and to ensure quality and continuous improvement to the manufacturing processes. The Robotics Engineer will Identify technology enhancements and develop custom designs that will improve efficiencies, capacity & throughput.. This position is expected to troubleshoot complex manufacturing issues, improve existing manufacturing processes, qualify robotics and automation procedures and prepare engineering documentation and instructions to support shop fabrications per industrial standards. While keeping safety as a priority, this position is responsible for developing preventative & predictive maintenance procedures on automation systems to minimize downtime. The position is expected to provide troubleshooting, training & technical support to production teams when necessary.
The position has a primary responsibility to assist in the development and realization of the plant’s continuous improvement initiative, with an emphasis on successful implementation of plant automation projects.

Supports manufacturing by troubleshooting existing automation equipment.
Trains technical associates on current and new automation equipment.
Responsible for the project management, complete design and deployment of the mechanical, electrical and control systems of new and retrofitted industrial automation equipment.
Ability to manage & develop automation projects in-house along with multiple outside vendors.
Mechanically inclined, strong problem solving skills, hands-on individual.
Empowers peers through positive reinforcement of team oriented continuous improvement.
Communicates status of engineering efforts to plant management and other engineering resources within the division.
Provides documentation of results and benefits achieved.
Troubleshoot complex manufacturing issues and improve existing manufacturing processes.
Lead Valmont in staying apprised of state of the art production robotics and automation processes and implementing best practices
Comply with all Safety Policies, Procedures, and Quality Systems Procedures
Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure compliance with established procedures, restrictions and standards
This position reports to the Manager AMET, Robotics and Automation and has no direct reports or indirect reports
This role requires up to 50% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Welding Engineering, Automation & Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical or Electro-Mechanical) or similar discipline
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Power Point, MS Office Suite, 2D CAD & Solid Modeling.
Decisive problem-solving ability and capability to assess people and situations with accuracy
Analytical Skills - Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve problems
Highly motivated with a desire to tackle challenging opportunities
Flexible - can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines; able to work with short lead times in pressure situations
Confident self-starter with integrity and accountability
Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
Must be able to effectively and persuasively present complex information in a simply way to executive level audiences

Proven experience with effectively communicating at all levels including plant, leadership, customer, and third-party lab/inspection entities

Ability to work with and negotiate with sub-contractors
Knowledgeable of Lean Manufacturing and Kaizen techniques
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Engineering
Automation with with 5+ years working experience in a manufacturing environment, experience with robotics, AI and machine learning, and a solid understanding of computer programming and software development.
Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing techniques
Familiarity with Six Sigma, Lean and other analytical tools and procedures
Experience in a multi-site manufacturing organization
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. Domestic and international travel required for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
