A Brief Summary of This Position:
Primary functions of the Associate Design Engineer include the engineering design and development activities required to meet project requirements as defined by the Product Management team. The Associate Design Engineer will also focus support on the ongoing product localization efforts currently underway across all Valley irrigation manufacturing facilities globally. The incumbent will help to coordinate the work flow of the design team in order to meet milestone dates for those projects assigned. The design team may consist of one or more individuals from Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, Service, Quality Assurance and Engineering Services. The incumbent utilizes in-house consultation of various colleagues and fellow Engineers to assure specifications are met, and receives guidance from Manufacturing to ensure design efficiency and manufacturability. Depending on the scope of the project, the Associate Design Engineer may be responsible for leading the development team. This engineer is responsible for attending technical design review meetings and providing technical design inputs. In order to meet the expectations of this position, the incumbent must be able to follow standard design and development procedures and recommends updates to design and development procedures as necessary. The incumbent must continually improve his or her knowledge of existing Valmont products, and keep up-to-date on manufacturing capabilities.
Engage in design and development activities to meet project requirements
Work with individuals from Manufacturing Engineering, Ag Specialty, Service and Engineering Services to ensure design efficiency and manufacturability
Participate in technical design review meetings and conference calls and provide mechanical design direction and input
Follow standard design and development procedures, recommending updates to design procedures when needed
Coordinate the activities and workflow of the Engineering Technicians
Responsible for the engineering design and development of new products to meet requirements as defined by the Product Management team
Responsible for modifications to existing designs and products to meet changes in manufacturing capabilities, support cost reduction activities, and address reliability and warranty issues
Responsible for providing creative and innovative engineering solutions that aid in the resolution of field and manufacturing problems and in the maintenance and improvement of existing products
Responsible for implementing all phases of project plans and monitoring progress per established schedule and budget targets
Responsible for maintaining good relationships with customers, field personnel and other Valmont departments to ensure the most efficient working environment
Responsible for coordinating and conducting laboratory or field testing as situations dictate
Provide technical support to other departments as required toward meeting the needs of our customers
This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager
This role may require up to 10% travel (domestic or international)
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years of relevant experience
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite
Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%
Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills
Proven experience managing products
Proven experience in the mechanical design field
Experience with design software including Pro Engineer (Creo), ANSYS, Adobe Acrobat and QAD
Proven ability to mentor and lead others
Ability to communicate in English, both in written and verbal interactions
Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
Desire to take on new challenges and provide innovative solutions
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Agricultural Engineering
Experience with steel metallurgy, welding processes
Experience in design for fatigue, preferably of welded steel structures
A strong working knowledge of mechanized irrigation systems
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
Experience with Agile

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting. There will be exposure to a manufacturing environment or outside weather conditions. When visiting a manufacturing area, the incumbent will be required to wear all mandatory personal protective equipment. The incumbent may be required to move about in the growers’ fields. Domestic and/or international travel, including overnights, may be required up to 10%. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. The incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
