A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position entails independently analyzing and designing utility transmission and distribution structures for the Valmont Utility Division's Steel Group. Responsibilities include handling specific quotes and orders, providing general design support, and collaborating with the Engineering Team to ensure timely project completion. The Design Engineer consults with senior engineers to ensure designs meet customer specifications and are practical for manufacturing.

Essential Functions:

  • Reports to site Engineering Manager/Supervisor with no direct or indirect reports

  • Analyzes and designs products using Finite Element Method and other structural design software, considering public safety, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness

  • Interprets customer specifications, needs, and market/sales requirements

  • Communicates engineering data to customers, including cost-related requirements, reviewing engineering drawings, and evaluating as-built products

  • Supports the Drafting team to ensure project requirements are properly detailed and order processing proceeds efficiently

  • Builds and fosters internal relationships and communications to maintain a professional work environment

  • Recommends testing to confirm theoretical designs and coordinates testing as necessary

  • Communicates information about new ideas, product improvements, etc., to increase morale and efficiency

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with 2 to 5+ years of preferred relevant experience

  • Technical competence in Structural Engineering

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification

  • Proficiency in 3D computer-aided design and experience with AutoCAD

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure in Civil or Structural Engineering

  • A strong understanding of product end-use and design load development

  • Prior experience in designing steel monopoles or industrial utility structures
