A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Business Intelligence and Market Research Intern works as part of the Strategic Marketing Team and is responsible for supporting Valmont’s business divisions through various data and research projects. As a member of the team, you get to hone your skills as an analyst and researcher while working with a variety of professionals and learning how Valmont improves life across the world. Primary responsibilities of the role include development and maintenance of reporting tools and reports as well as quantitative and qualitative market research and analysis. In our team, you utilize cutting-edge tools to collect data and information, perform analysis on various datasets, visualize data, identify trends, and use your findings and insights to support strategic decision-making. This role will be versatile reaching across skills needed in marketing, business, and IT. An analytical mind, attention to detail, and being able to solve problems through critical thinking are keys for success in this job. Being driven, curious, eager to learn/improve, self-motivated, and organized, as well as having the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team will help you excel in this role. Finally, the analysis you perform and deliver to leadership will have the power to influence significant business decisions, so both written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills are essential.

Valmont’s internship program mission is to provide a hands-on learning experience through project work, leadership development, job shadowing and interaction with senior leadership.

Essential Functions:

  • Gather project requirements from stakeholders to fully understand their needs

  • Develop reports, data visualizations, and dashboards using Microsoft Excel and Tableau to identify trends and gain insights

  • Maintain and improve existing business intelligence reports, datasets, and tools

  • Monitor and analyze external information sources such as industry news, construction trends, and market/economic indicators

  • Conduct custom market research based on strategic business needs, employing both primary and secondary research methods

  • Assist in development of business forecasting models

  • Distill key findings into concise and effective presentation format using PowerPoint

  • Present findings and impact assessments to leadership on a regular basis

  • This position reports to the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst

  • Ability to travel to company location in Omaha, NE as needed

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Support sales teams with competitive intelligence and agent performance reporting

  • Collaborate with internal teams to expand the data warehouse and test/validate the implemented improvements

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Junior/Senior student pursuing a degree with an emphasis on business intelligence, statistics, MIS, or a related analytics/quantitative field

  • Demonstrated understanding of marketing and business functions, and their data use/needs

  • Demonstrated ability to transform data into insights using data analysis/visualization tools and techniques

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills with primary and secondary research methods, such as interviews, surveys, internet searches, web scraping, etc.

  • Experience with business forecasting methods

  • Experience working with relational databases and/or data warehouses

  • Proficiency with coding languages, such as SQL, Python, DAX

  • Expertise with using Microsoft Excel for storing, manipulating, and analyzing data

  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization tools, such as Tableau, PowerBI

  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to manage time to meet deadlines while working in a detail-oriented and organized way

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a diverse work environment

  • Proven and effective writing, communication, and presentation skills

  • Ability to design clean, organized, and user friendly presentations, reports, and report tools

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Graduate student pursuing a degree with an emphasis on business intelligence, statistics, MIS, or a related analytics/quantitative field

  • Success in prior work or coursework with data visualization, market research, business forecasting, statistical analysis, and/or programming

  • Experience in researching and estimating market sizes and competitor market shares

  • Experience in determining and comparing forecast model performance using statistical methods and measures

  • Experience with agile development process and gathering user requirements

  • Experience with Jira and/or Microsoft Teams

  • Knowledge and/or experience from the business side of the infrastructure, agriculture, energy, coatings, and/or other related industries relevant to Valmont

Working Environment and Physical Efforts: Can be used for the majority of administrative positions

Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
