Working under the direction of the Production Supervisor or Plant Manager, and within the guidelines of established procedures, the Shipper unloads or load shipments. Once unpacked, incoming shipments are examined and damaged items are rejected. All shortages need to be recorded and correspondence with the shipper will need to take place to rectify damages and shortages. Items are then routed to the appropriate departments. As part of this position the shipper may operate the following equipment: forklift, hand and air banding and crimping tools, lift tables, small hand tools, vacu-lifts, weight scales, air driven staple/nail guns, radial arm saw and heat shrink ovens. Shippers may be trained to work in more than one of the following areas within Shipping: crate line, sockets, kit pack, inside service parts, sprinkler charts, sprinkler hardware, sprinkler drop, cutting miscellaneous motor leads, inventory, or overhead cranes. One of the main tasks is to compare identifying information (amounts, weights, measurements) of incoming and outgoing items to verify information against the bill of lading, invoices, orders and other records. The incumbent needs to be able to identify errors in shipping and part order paperwork, recognize weight discrepancies and bring them to the attention of the appropriate personnel. Wooden or cardboard containers may need to be assembled when preassembled containers are not available or appropriate for the shipment. The items on the order are then selected and carefully placed into the containers. Once the order is completed or the container is full and meets all specifications, the container is banded with a metal bander. The Shipper then stamps, stencils, glues or affixes identifying shipping information on cartons. Similar to other plant employees, the Shipper participates in Lean projects within the plant and works in a manner consistent with stated company safety policies.

Valmont Industries is a leading producer and distributor of products for the infrastructure and agriculture markets.
Valmont Industries began in 1946 when our founder, Robert B. Daugherty combined his $5,000 savings and wholehearted belief that business could and should be done better. Since that modest start more than half a century ago, our company has grown to be an international leader in engineered products and services for infrastructure and water-conserving irrigation equipment for agriculture.
From the lighting and traffic structures that guide your way, to communication towers and utility structures that power your home and business, to irrigation equipment that waters the croplands on which your food is grown, Valmont products improve lives worldwide.
Valmont Industries operates in five primary business segments: Engineered Support Structures, Utility Support Structures, Coatings, Energy and Mining, and Irrigation. Valmont (VMI) is publicly traded on the NYSE.
