Working under the direction of the Production Supervisor or Plant Manager, and within the guidelines of established procedures, the Machine Operator sets up and operates machining centers that perform machine functions to bend, sheer or punch metal structural shapes such as rods, angles, pipes and tubes. Metal is also angled or contoured according to the specifications of the work order, drawings, templates or layouts. The operator reviews the set up sheet and specifications to determine proper setup procedure, machining sequence and dimensions of finished piece. He/She selects and installs holding devices such as blocks and clamps on indexing table of machine. The positions and clamps indicate stops on the machine to set specified location of the bend in the material. Plug stops are inserted or screwed into guide wheel to set the correct degree of the bend. The control on the machine is manipulated to enter the correct commands to bend or cut tool to specified set points. The Machine Operator must pay close attention to the machine in order to detect any malfunctions or damage to the tool. Once cut or bent, the work piece is measured by the operator for conformance to specifications. Once finished and checked the Machine Operator stacks the finished materials onto a material handling device. Similar to other plant employees, the Machine Operator participates in Lean projects within the plant and works in a manner consistent with stated company safety policies.
